Do you remember taking apart electronic devices as a kid? Maybe it was a tiny little radio or walkie-talkie that wasn’t working anymore. Perhaps it was something bigger like a television. In fact, if it was a long enough time ago, what you were seeing could have been a printed wiring board, or even printed wiring cards. They were a whole lot messier than what they have now: a printed circuit board (PCB). In addition, the wire connections would often come apart, so it was a tedious process constantly looking for that one loose wire. It is amazing how quickly technology has moved over the last half-century for some items, but we still have yet to have hovering vehicles or a skateboard that rides around on air. Those Back to the Future films were a bit misleading after all.
Size and Cost Difference
There were benefits to the invention of the PWB. For one, it was a simpler process. For another, it was a whole lot less expensive for parts and labor when building electronic devices. There is a reason those huge flat screen televisions have gone down in price considerably over the last ten years. Part of the reason is definitely the PWB.
Fixing It Can Be Easy
You probably have a large PCB in a few of your bigger electronic devices that is basically built from many smaller PCBs. Now, if there is a device that needs to be looked at after it has stopped working, then just one of the smaller PCBs has to be taken out and replaced. This allows a device to be repaired in a matter of minutes now instead of hours.

Not all PCB boards are created equal. Some manufacturers choose to use lesser and cheaper parts that do not stand up to the test of time.
